Custom Garment Work

includes collaborative customization of a beloved garment to tell a personal story in colors & thread.

this particular shirt is a family heirloom naturally dyed with onion & avocado skins for a messy, pinkish tint, & hand-embroidered with loose florals around the lower perimeter of the garment to evoke the feeling of falling autumn leaves. the buttons were replaced with vintage mother of pearl buttons from my collection, & the shirt was hemmed for a more feminine fit than the original tailoring. this customization was made in memory of my grandfather, who gave me the "shirt off his back" before he died of vascular dementia. we almost share a birthday at the end of October, & I will always especially think of him when the weather turns cold & the ground is littered with dried leaves & flowers. I especially like the little black ink spot at the bottom of the pocket from his pen. I certainly got my love of reading & research from him.
